Wisp Resort Closed For The Season 3/18/12

Wisp Resort Closed For The Season 3/18/12

Wisp Resort has closed the doors this weekend as the springtime temperatures have finally decided to consistently stay warm enough to make snowmaking impossible. It has been a very successful winter for Wisp even though Mother Nature made them work harder than normal to keep snow on the ground. Thankfully the temps dipped periodically throughout the season, and when they did, Wisp was ready on every occasion to maximize their snow making efforts to keep excellent ski conditions throughout a very mild winter season. I talked to a lot of folks who weren’t complaining about skiing groomed corduroy trails with temps in the 50’s-60’s. Thanks Wisp Resort for a great winter season!

Snow Making Wisp Resort

Snow Making Wisp Resort

It is Friday, November 18, 2011 here at DeepCreekLake, one week before Thanksgiving.  Wisp Resort has fired up their state-of-the-art snowmaking system in preparation for the upcoming winter sports season. Temperatures are perfect for snowmaking at the moment, with humidity down to 50%, crucial for getting that coveted light champagne powder. Wisp Resort is always on the pulse of preparation year-after-year, enabling them to deliver some of the finest snow conditions on the East Coast.

The temperatures will fluctuate a bit warmer during the week, but that doesn’t mean that this is some vain fire drill and time wasted.  After all, snowmaking is a very complex system that has miles and miles of pipe, valves, snow guns, and nozzles that have to be turned on and pressurized to assure that all the bugs are out of the system before the season starts. Wisp Resort is meticulous regarding every aspect & detail, to guarantee a problem-free experience for everyone that visits the mountain. We have closed the chapter on the summer season and the presence of active snowmaking machines is a signal to locals (like the leaves changing in the fall) that the snow season is about to begin.

Deep Creek Lake and Wisp Resorts 55th Birthday Party

Deep Creek Lake and Wisp Resorts 55th Birthday Party

Wisp Resort has reached another epic milestone this weekend as they celebrated their 55th Birthday as the go-to ski resort on the East Coast. What better way to celebrate than bringing in Food Network’s most popular cake artists, Charm City Cakes. Duff Goldman led the charge straight off the snowboard slope to christen and cut the cake with his crew. It was standing room only on Sunday in the Wisp Lodge to get a glimpse of the cake re-creation of the Wisp Mountain and the Ski & Golf Resort. The snow has been steadily pounding us here at Deep Creek Lake and skiing conditions are improving with every new inch we receive. Wisp has had their snowmaking efforts rolling around the clock for the last couple weeks to ensure that we had a full parking lot of skiers to celebrate their wonderful milestone Birthday party.

Deep Creek Lake Wisp Resort Winter Sports

Okay folks; get your minds centered at the task at hand. Feel the cold winter, accept the cold winter, love the cold winter! After you get in the winter spirit, turn your focus toward Deep Creek Lake and Wisp Resort and get ready for the winter sports to begin. We have had steady flow of snowfall for the last week and conditions are improving at Wisp Resort. Wisp has had the snowmaking canons firing around the clock for the last couple of weeks to ensure that they have a solid base of snow to get the season started. As I look out my window from Long and Foster across the lake, my vision of the ski slopes is impaired because of the amount of snow we are getting at the moment. It is forecasted to keep coming down for the next few days, and then on and off for the next 10 days. Load up the car and the family, set your GPS for Wisp Resort and spend the next couple of weeks of the holiday season enjoying impressive powder. See you on the slopes.

Karen Myers inducted in the Maryland Business Hall of Fame

Karen Myers  inducted in  the Maryland Business Hall of Fame

Last night I was fortunate enough to attend the Maryland Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame Award Ceremonies.  Deep Creek Lake native and a 10th generation Frazee, Karen Frazee Myers, was inducted into Maryland’s Business Hall of Fame.  Karen was recognized by her peers for her decades of promotion of the one-time sleepy Deep Creek Lake/Garrett County area, which has become a go-to destination for Mid-Atlantic residents.

Karen’s “nose to grindstone” work ethic has bloomed several successful businesses throughout her lengthy career.  Her flourishing businesses, Mountaineer Log & Siding www.mountaineerlog.com, Wisp Ski & Golf Resort www.wispresort.com, Deep Creek Marina www.deepcreekmarina.com, and real estate business are products of her relentless determination.

Even during the big moment in her life, Karen still recognizes her partners, her family, her friends and her employee’s who have supported her through sometimes difficult years.  Her resiliency through the hard times (and the good times) along with her insight into what would make her endeavors successful has paid off long term.

Karen’s career really started 35 years ago in the real estate business when the lake was “undiscovered” as a resort and second home destination.  It took many years for Karen to put Garrett County and Deep Creek Lake on a mainstream map.

Her daughter, Betsy Spiker, took over the reigns from her mother to become Deep Creek Lake’s trusted real estate guru

She has mentored her children throughout their lives to be positive community role models and successful business leaders.  Her son, Adrian Spiker, has taken a dream of creating the best marina in Deep Creek Lake and made it a reality.  She has influenced and guided him into making the most thriving marina on the lake.

“Not too bad for a country girl” says Karen Myers at the awards podium in Baltimore, Maryland.  Not too bad at all for a woman who grew up in a family from White Rock who exceeded, by anybody’s standards, personal success…business success…family success…community success…spiritual success…  I have been fortunate to be in Karen’s circle for the past 3 years and understand and respect why the State of Maryland has chose to recognize this special woman with such a prestigious honor.

 Congratulations, Karen!!

Long and Foster at Deep Creek Lake supports PAWS

Long and Foster at Deep Creek Lake supports PAWS

I am very proud to work for a company here on Deep Creek Lake that continually helps raise money for heartfelt causes and charities in our community. Long and Foster employees and The Spiker Team consistently lead the way in volunteering in events like The Special Olympics, The Deep Creek Dunk, The Lions Club, The Cardboard Box Derby and many other rewarding causes.

Last night at Wispers Bar at Wisp Resort, Long and Foster showed up again to support PAWS aka Partners of Animal Welfare and Safety. This nonprofit volunteer organization has been around since 2001 and has led a crusade to protect the interests of animals here in Garrett County. They help end the suffering of unwanted animals by reducing pet over-population through spay/neuter and feral cat programs. They assist low income residents by paying for portions of vet bills for neutering and spaying their animals. Check out their website and learn a lot more about this wonderful organization and also upcoming fundraiser events.

Legendary and loved Long and Foster agent Ed King was behind the bar with Betsy Spiker volunteering their time as guest bartenders. The PAWS donation bucket was filled up by the end of the night and the raffle tickets that cluttered the bar and restaurant area also raised a lot of money. Thanks to all who made it out and contributed to a fun time for another great cause.
